Access to source materials is seldom readily available for many readers. Readers often find they need to spend hundreds of dollars on books to simply check one or two facts. Readers who do check facts are ever-increasingly finding the source material has either been taken out of context or has been misquoted completely. This is the nature of the electronic world in which we live; misinformation is often repeated and compounded. I wanted to avoid this situation while compiling this work. Therefore, I established the following goals.

1. The writing must be educational.
2. The writing must be accurate and dependable.
3. The writing must use reputable sources.
4. The sources must be easily accessible without compromising quality, integrity, and accuracy.

The electronic age made these goals attainable. Many databases, such as Google books, Project Gutenberg, and De Gruyter, have digitized enormous collections which are in the public domain. These digitized copies have been scanned from the original works and are, therefore, identical in substance and merit to the original. These databases include the works of great historical writers such as Thomas Jefferson, Ovid, Virgil, and Livy to name only a few. These databases are often freely available to anyone with access to the internet. Never in the history of the world have so many people had equal access to many of these writings. Today, we do.

Unfortunately, a thorough and complete investigation of the subject matter could not be completed without the use of books excluded from the public domain in some instances. The interest of accuracy and thoroughness prevailed in these instances. Links have been provided to where these books may be purchased in most cases. Readers may also be able to find some of these books in their local library. Regretfully, this will not be possible in all cases.

The instances where a reader will need to purchase a book or even go to the library to check a fact contained within this writing are few and far between. Readers will be able to check more than ninety percent of the references used in this writing with a few clicks on their computer. A link to the source is clickable right from this page in most cases. These links lead directly to the source file on the database. Users can then search the book on the database by using the text in a direct quote or by using the given page number.
