Biblical Commentaries

Gen 11:27 Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.

We have already looked at the meaning of the names Terah, Abram, Nahor and Haran. Now let's take a look at the meaning behind Lot. H3876 lote The same as H3875; Lot, Abraham's nephew: - Lot.H3875 lote From H3874; a veil: - covering. H3874 loot A primitive root; to wrap up: - cast, wrap.

We already know that names in the Bible have meaning. What is the significance of Lot's name which means veil? Veil is the perfect name for Lot in every sense of the word.

In one sense the lineage of Lot is not the lineage to be watched. It is not the lineage of the great Patriarchs and of Jesus. That lineage is through his uncle Abraham. The lineage from Lot is not the focal point of our Bible, and is not the lineage that is followed in detail by our Bible. Therefore it is veiled from the sight of the reader.

The lineage of Lot is also tainted by incest. Lot had 4 children. Two boys and two girls. Each of the two daughters of Lot are both mother and sister to one of the son's of Lot.

Gen 19:36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

In this sense, the lineage would be veiled by the cloud of incest. We must remember that incest as we think of it today was very much a part of life for the early inhabitants of the earth. However, incest in the form of a Father - Daughter relationship is something very different even in the era of early human history.

It is worth pointing out here that in Islam, Lot is considered a prophet. Some Islamic sects justify or downplay the incestuous acts between Lot and his daughters. Most sects simply deny it altogether because the Qur'an does not mention Lot being drunk or engaging in incest with his daughters.

The lineage of Lot would also produce the Moabites and the children of Ammon, who would come to plague the Israelites both in war and in temptation to serve other god's.

Gen 19:37 And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

Jdg 10:6 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the LORD, and served not him.

Gen 19:38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

Jdg 3:13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

In this sense, the lineage of Lot would become veiled from the site of God because they served other gods and fought against the chosen people.

Zep 2:8 I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border.

The Bible has much to say about this lineage and for the most part it is not good. It is clear from the Bible that this lineage was given a chance to serve God.

Deu 2:19 And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.

However, these people rejected God and their judgment will be by God in the end times.

Jer 48:47 Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.

Jer 49:4 Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me?

Jer 49:6 And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith the LORD.

At one point the Bible even compares the destruction of Moab and the children of Ammon to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. This appears ironic to me since this lineage was originally saved from the destruction that befell Sodom and Gomorrah when Lot and his daughters were spared.

Zep 2:9 Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them.

The inheritance that was reserved for this people will pass to Israel

Jer 49:2 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD.

Finally there is a very literal sense of the word "veiled" which is the meaning of the name Lot that we must look at here. The Moabites were overran by and absorbed into some of the northern tribes of Arabia. Historical records tell us that the Ammonites were still numerous in the second century A.D. The descendants of these people exist today. We know this because the Bible provides "end time" prophecies for them. Who are they? A clue may be given in the name of Lot. Veiled. Who wears veils to cover their face? Most people will quickly jump to a conclusion here and say the Muslims. We should not be so hasty. Many different religious sects currently wear or have worn the burqa or hijab. The list includes some Christians, some Jews and some Muslims and there may be others that I am unaware of. So who are the Moabites and the children of Ammon today? I will not say for sure, but I will say that whoever they are, they are very literally wearing a veil. Is this speculation? I don't think so. Besides the NAME "Lot", the WORD "lot" in Hebrew is used as a noun in Isaiah 25:7. In Hebrew the WORD "lot" and the NAME "Lot" are identical and Isaiah 25:7 is the only place in the Bible where this word is used as a noun and not a name. The word is translated as "covering" in this verse and also the word "cast" is at it's root the same word.

Isa 25:7 And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations.

The words "of the" before the word "covering" are added in the translation. Try reading this verse without those added words. Am I making a leap in logic here to suppose that this verse is speaking directly to the descendants of Lot? I encourage you to read Isaiah 25 in it's entirety to decide for yourself. I will however say that these verses do indeed speak to the descendants of Lot. I point to Isaiah 25:10 as evidence of this.

Isa 25:10 For in this mountain shall the hand of the LORD rest, and Moab shall be trodden down under him, even as straw is trodden down for the dunghill.

We know without doubt that Moab is the son of Lot.

Gen 19:36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
Gen 19:37 And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

There are indeed terrible times ahead for the descendants of Lot.

There are some who will attempt to take the words written here and direct them towards people of the Muslim faith as a whole. This would of course be in error. The whole of Islam does not wear the veil or burqa and all Muslims are certainly not descended from Lot. The line which separates a descendant of Lot from everyone else is not drawn by denomination of faith.

Psalm 83:5-8 is an endtime scripture.
For they have consulted together with one consent;
They form a confederacy against You:
The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab and the Hagrites; Gebal, Ammon and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assyria also has joined with them; They have helped the children of Lot.
This is what we can expect for Israel. I do not know of a time in history where this has been fulfilled yet, so it will be for the days to come.

i am amazed at this early history and often wonder where these people groups are concentrated in these days. It would be a fascinating observation.
I know language and dialects are very telling also.

Much thanks,
